When she left the hospital room, her hands were still sticky with blood and spinal fluid. Sakura walked along the wall, out of the way of the other people, until she reached the alcove that contained the sink. She reached for the closest bottle of soap there, and began to scrub down her hands and forearms.

Six minutes later, when Tsunade had arrived and looked over the body briefly, she was still washing. The older woman gestured for the nurse to take over the paperwork and made her way to the teenager.

She turned off the water, looking at her. Sakura shook her hands briefly and wouldn't meet her eyes.

"Sakura," she said, "sometimes you're going to kill people. That's part of being a doctor."

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

"You did what was best," Tsunade replied. "I checked. But sometimes that's not enough."

Sakura nodded once, and Tsunade paused. When she spoke again, her voice was a touch gentler. "I'll speak to his family."

Sakura's entire upper body sagged with relief, but a few seconds later, it became tense again.

"Thank you, Tsunade-shishou," she murmured, reaching for the paper towels, "but I should do it. It's only. . . ."

"Okay," Tsunade replied, and rested a hand on her shoulder briefly. "Take the rest of the day off after you do."

Sakura nodded again, threw the crumpled paper towels away, and then made her way back down the hall.
